On October 21, 2026, the hands-on workshop “Refurbished for Reuse” took place, focusing on the refurbishment of recovered concrete components for modular reuse.
The workshop began with a brief theoretical introduction to the refurbishment and repair of reinforced concrete components by Prof. Iurie Curoșu. This was followed by a practical session led by staff from MC-Bauchemie Müller GmbH, during which the CRC’s doctoral candidates were able to learn about various concrete restoration techniques and apply them directly to concrete elements for the public demonstrator.
Among other things, methods for repairing damaged concrete areas—including substrate preparation, restoration of corrosion protection on (partially) corroded reinforcing bars, and the application of surface protection systems—were presented and applied. In addition, techniques for measuring moisture content and carbonation depth were demonstrated.
The workshop was jointly organized and conducted by the Chair of Structural Engineering (Hendrik Zielonka, Sylvia Meister, Thilo Schmidt) and the Chair of Building Materials Engineering (Oleksandr Al-Shboul, Prof. Iurie Curoșu) in cooperation with the company MC-Bauchemie Müller. We would like to express our sincere thanks to MC-Bauchemie Müller for the fascinating insight into the practical application of treatment methods and for the knowledgeable and friendly guidance provided by Jan Hübner and Julian Hübner, as well as the staff at the KIB-KON test facility.
